October 3, 2010 – The raw food movement (also known as raw foodism or rawism) focuses on a diet of unheated foods that are under 115F or (46C). These diets are based on raw vegan diets consisting of unprocessed raw plant foods. It is believed by Raw foodists that raw foods are more easily metabolized and include foods that are lower in calories.
Many followers will say that raw food diets promote fast weight loss and are healthier than average diets today. By keeping foods below 115F it preserves the enzymes and nutrients of the food and they believe cooking the food is actually unhealthy. They claim there is an increase in their energy levels and a decrease in bad food cravings.
Eating diets consisting mainly of fruits, veggies, nuts and grains this vegan based diet like their opposites in the meat based Paleolithic diet followers believe reduces the risk of many mainstream diseases.
Scientists and researchers however are concerned that raw food followers are putting themselves at risk of unhealthy side effects the worst being food poisoning. Obviously when eating protein based meats and fish there are risks when eating them raw. In addition buckwheat and kidney beans are toxic when raw. Researchers also squash the claims of enzyme loss in foods as food enzymes are broken down in the stomach and most of the nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine after the enzymes have already been destroyed.
While there is probably little controversy over the fact that following a raw food diet will help you lose weight fast the health benefits will continue to be argued. Following such a diet will require a tremendous amount of planning and food must be prepared properly to avoid food poisoning. The raw food diet encourages consumption of fruits and vegetables and as a result is a low calorie, low fat diet. But many may find this diet very difficult to follow over a long term.
