Squeezing Extra Storage Space out of a Small Kitchen

October 4, 2010 – People that live in apartment or small home know how frustrating it can be to not have that much room to store items in the kitchen. After all, the kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the house. This is where we do the most work when we are not at our jobs. We prepare meals and wash dishes in the kitchen and need to store all the supplies, tools, utensils, dishes and ingredients to make the meals or to wash the dishes. One way to help a small kitchen use the space more efficiently is by using kitchen storage canisters or a spice rack.

Kitchen storage canisters can be used to keep large cooking utensils on the counter instead of in a drawer. Typically these utensils take up so much room that it is hard to put anything else in the drawer. That means that all the other little items wind up in one drawer and you have to go fishing for the right utensil when you need it. Storage canisters can also keep dry foods like flour and sugar more secure than just leaving them in their bags. With the compact size of some canisters it is easy to put several on top of each other in a cabinet.

In any well equipped kitchen there will be any number of essential spices. These spices can take up cabinet or drawer space and in some cases cabinet space if there are in a carousel type rack. One way to store the spices is with a spice rack that adheres to the inside of a cabinet door or a pantry door. These racks can be put up with double sided tape and are sturdy enough to stay up for a long time. By putting the rack on the inside of the door it keeps the spices out of the way and easy to get to. One important thing to remember is that when placing a spice rack it is best to keep it away from the stove. The heat and steam can make the spices go bad sooner than they naturally would.

There are all kinds of kitchen storage containers that you can use to help organize the limited space that you may have. These are some suggestions as to how to squeeze as much room out of a small kitchen as possible.
